2018 AMIA Annual Symposium

2018 AMIA Annual Symposium will be held in San Francisco this November 3-7! Nationwide Children's Hospital will have its own booth to introduce our science and research. Our research group will also present our work on (1) digital health solutions for self-management of teens and (2) biomedical search engine development. For details, visit AMIA 2018 web site.

Our paper on digital solutions and self-management for teens with chronic conditions transitioning independence is published by Journal Medical Internet Research,  the leading medical informatics journal.

I had an interview with Tekdozdijital.com, an online digital health magazine from Turkey. We talked about my dissertation research on mobile health, mobile health apps, and the state of use in Turkey among physicians.

Title: Big Data for Driving Safety: Literature Review

Abstract:

Driving safety has been a major challenge for many societies. The National Center for Health Statistics of the United States reported 73 percent of total unintentional injury deaths are caused by motor vehicle traffic accident, and for adolescents, majority of actions leading to accidents are based on teen behaviors. Teen drivers have crash rates 3 times higher than those of drivers 20 years old and older per mile driven. Immaturity leads to speeding and other risky habits, and inexperience means teen drivers often don’t recognize or know how to respond to hazards.

To reduce the mortality rates, number of investigations has been held for driving behavior change. In that regard, researchers have been proposing technology-based approaches to increase awareness and promoting safe driving. In this presentation, we will have a closer look to these approaches. Our agenda will include (1) a summary of the proposed technology-based interventions and solutions, and (2) a synthesis of the literature outlining how the use of technology for teens affects safe driving behavior.
